Heart & Vascular
Cardiology is a specialty that deals with disorders of the heart. This includes disorders of coronary circulation, heart valves, myocardium, pericardium, congenital heart disease, cardiac arrest and vascular diseases.
Our cardiologists also subspecialise in one or more of the following disciplines:
- Cardiac electrophysiology – Study of the rhythm of the heart
- Echocardiography – Study of the structure and mechanical function of the heart using ultrasound
- Interventional cardiology – A minimally invasive method of treatment for structural, coronary and vascular disorders with the use of small catheters, stents and/or mechanical devices.
What Is Cardiology?
Cardiology is the sector of medicine that focuses on the heart and vascular system. This includes disorders of the heart muscle, heart valves, the heart’s rhythm, the blood vessels, and the supply of blood to the body as well as the congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease and other disorders of the vascular system.
Our Cardiologists will work with you to:
- Clarify your heart health and evaluate your risk factors (e.g. family history, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lifestyle)
- Identify the early stages of cardiovascular disease through various diagnostic test procedures ranging from diagnostic non-invasive imaging to sophisticated studies that evaluate heart function.
- Control and/or manage the therapy of acute or chronic heart disease with an individualized treatment approach, lifestyle changes, and as appropriate, referrals to a cardiac surgeon as needed, and intervention heart healing procedures.
- Get routine care and management of pre-existing or chronic health conditions to help prevent the development of other heart problems in the future.
Common Indications & Screening
The following is a list of reasons you may want to see a cardiologist:
- Chest pain, discomfort, pressure, or heaviness especially if it spreads to one or more arms, neck, jaw, back, or shoulders.
- Experiencing an irregular heartbeat or a racing heart along with dizziness, fainting, or fatigue with no known cause.
- Feeling short of breath, breathless, or have a lowered tolerance for physical activity.
- Legs, ankles, or feet swelling. These may be other signs of poor circulation or vascular disease.
- Risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, a smoking history, family history of heart disease, or even if it's just your average regular health screening for preventative reasons.
In particular, regular screening may help identify and address 'silent' heart disease so you can prevent and treat heart disease before issues arise.
Diagnostic Tools & Treatments Available
At Pantai Hospital Cheras, we provide cardiology services that include diagnosis and treatment with the help of some of the most advanced tools and approaches in the field of cardiology:
- ECGs, echocardiograms, stress tests, and possibly CT or MRI scans, which are detailed imaging studies of the heart, as a part of the non-invasive tests.
- Interventional cardiology, which includes catheter-based, stent, and mechanical device implantation for certain structural, coronary, and vascular disorders.
- Disorders of cardiac rhythm ± electrophysiology services to help manage and treat certain complex conditions involving damaged heart tissues that result in arrhythmias.
- Preventive care and active risk-factor management, which includes counselling on lifestyle choices, diet, and physical activity, along with the continuous surveillance of blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and other vascular risk factors.
- Comprehensive care with ongoing chronic illness management to help patients retain their heart health and prevent possible comorbidities.
