Anaesthesiology (Pain Management & Critical Care)

Anaesthesiology encompasses specialised expertise in pain management and critical care, two closely related yet distinct disciplines dedicated to improving patient comfort, stabilising life-threatening conditions, and optimising recovery outcomes.

Pain Management

Pain management focuses on the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic pain conditions.

Acute pain is sudden in onset and commonly associated with injury, trauma or surgery, typically improving as healing occurs.
Chronic pain persists beyond the normal healing period (usually more than three months) and may be constant or intermittent.

Pain is frequently linked to conditions such as cancer, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, endometriosis, migraines and nerve disorders. Persistent or unexplained pain should not be ignored, as it may indicate an underlying medical condition requiring specialist assessment.

During consultation, the specialist evaluates the nature, location and severity of pain to determine its root cause. Pain may be classified as:

  • Nociceptive pain (originating from tissue injury)
  • Neuropathic pain (arising from nerve damage)

Diagnostic investigations such as blood tests, X-rays, CT scans or MRI may be performed when clinically indicated.

Specialists in pain management, often anaesthesiologists with advanced training develop personalised, multidisciplinary treatment plans aimed not only at relieving pain but also restoring function, improving mobility and enhancing overall quality of life.

Pain Management Treatment Options:

  1. Injections and Stimulations
    1. Trigger point injections/steroid injections for pain relief directly to specific area
    2. Spinal cord stimulation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) or radiofrequency ablation to relieve nerve related pain
  2. Medication Therapy
    1. Over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics such as acetaminophen, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen) helps to reduce inflammation/swelling
    2. Topical pain relievers
  1. Psychological & Behavioural Therapy
    1. Cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, meditation and relaxation techniques
  2. Exercise & Rehabilitation
    1. Pilates, yoga and tai chi may help reduce chronic pain and improve overall body function besides maintaining positive mental health
  1. Complementary Therapies
    1. Physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, osteopathic (bone) manipulative therapy (OMT)
  2. Lifestyle Modifications
    1. Weight management, stress reduction strategies and ergonomics adjustments

Critical Care

Critical care focuses on the intensive monitoring and advanced medical management of patients with life-threatening illnesses or severe injuries, typically within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Patients may require critical care due to sudden medical emergencies or following major surgery, including:

  • Heart attack or post-cardiac surgery care
  • Stroke or post-neurosurgical monitoring
  • Severe infections, sepsis or shock
  • Respiratory failure requiring ventilatory support
  • Acute liver or kidney failure
  • Severe burns
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Complex post-operative recovery
