Upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery is a surgical specialty under the scope of general surgery that focuses on the diagnoses and treatment of all conditions relating to the upper GI tract. This includes the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first part of the small intestine). The upper GI tract is responsible for digesting food and preparing it for processing and absorption of nutrients throughout the body. Disrupted function of the upper GI tract could lead to significant implications to your overall digestive well-being.

During an appointment with your upper GI surgeons, you may be consulted and examined to further understand your conditions and if necessary, further diagnostic tests for deeper examination may be ordered for you before devising your individual treatment and management plan. Some diagnostic tests you may be put under include:

  1. Upper GI series (e.g., fluoroscopy)
  2. Ultrasounds
  3. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computed tomography (CT) scans
  4. Barium enema followed by x-ray imaging
  5. Upper GI endoscopy

    1. Also known as ani-reflux surgery.
