Allergy & Immunology

Allergy and immunology specialty focuses on the management (including diagnosis and treatment) of disorders that are related to the immune system of the body such as allergies, that result from an overreaction of your immune system’s response to substances, and autoimmune disorders, that occurs when your body’s immune system mistakenly attack your own healthy cells as foreign cells.

An allergic reaction can range from mild symptoms to serious, life-threatening ones, which may be caused by a variety of allergens such as pollens, dust mites, food, animals, and many more, depending on the individual. Some symptoms to recognize as an allergic reaction can include:

  1. Runny nose and sneezing
  2. Coughing, wheezing or breathlessness
  3. Rashes (itchy skin)
  4. Swelling or pain/itchiness in areas such as eyes, lips or throat
  5. Diarrhoea
  6. Fatigue
List of conditions:
  1. Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  2. Asthma
  3. Sinusitis (sinus infections)
  4. Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  5. Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction)
  6. Angioedema (swelling)

Typically, when you discover possible allergic reaction symptoms, our allergist will run some allergy tests to help determine the substances that may have caused the allergy or autoimmune disorder. You may undergo several diagnosis tests such as a skin prick/patch test, where a small amount of allergen is put on your skin to see if a reaction is observed, blood tests, to check for presence of allergens, or a special diet (if food allergy related).

List of procedures:
  1. Allergen avoidance
  2. Biologic agents
  3. Medications (e.g., antihistamines, steroid creams, EpiPen)
  4. Desensitization
  5. Immunotherapy
