Sports Injury & Trauma
Sports injuries occur while playing sports or exercising. Sports injuries can result
from accidents, poor training practices, inadequate equipment, and overuse of a body
part. Not warming up or stretching enough before play or exercise can also lead to
injuries.
Some common sports injuries include:
Symptoms of acute sports injury include:
- Immediate, severe pain
- Inability to place weight on foot, ankle, knee, or leg
- Swelling and tenderness
- Limited range of motion
- Joint or bone out of place
Chronic injuries are typically the result of overusing certain areas of the body
during sports or exercise over a long period of time.
Symptoms of chronic injuries include:
- Pain while resting or playing
- Swelling
Trauma include:
- Fractures: Occur when there is a direct blow or kick to the body, falls, trauma,
or both.
- Closed fractures (broken bone that does not puncture the skin)
- Open fractures (broken bone that punctures the skin)
- Stress fractures (small cracks in the bone due to repetitive movement or
action or overuse)
- Dislocation (a joint forced apart and out)
